Anatomical Sculptures of Mythical Beings by Masao Kinoshita

Sculpted out of fiberglass, the anatomical models of mythical beings and hybrid creatures by Masao Kinoshita resemble exhibits from another dimension.

It is not an art exhibit I am referring to here, but an otherworldly version of the world-famous Bodyworlds exhibition. One that doesn’t feature humans or animals, but showcases plastinated models of nymphs, centaurs, the legendary Pegasus and even the deity Ganesha. The latter is perhaps the most imposingly sculpted, with four arms and intricate detailing.

Showing these mythic figures and animals with their muscles and skeletal system exposed yanks them down from the lofty cloud-covered pedestals of legend and folklore, turning the previously untouchable mystery of their being into preserved specimens made for educational tours and public examination. Having a deeper understanding of something can lead to even greater appreciation, as shown with Bodyworlds’s intimate tribute to the human form!
